Art as Advertising – Annie Leibovitz goes all Disney on us again

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz has recently added to her collection of Disney character-styled Dream Portraits yet again. And yes, this lot is just as impressive as her others.

Leibovitz first partnered with Disney Parks and the Walt Disney Company in 2007 to promote their Year of A Million Dreams campaign. And after seeing the results, the crowd just keeps calling for more. Leibovitz has obliged.

This time it’s the likes of Russel Brand using his posing skills to good advantage as swarthy Captain Hook, the arch nemesis of Peter Pan.

Will Ferrell, Jack Black and Jason Segel make a historical first in the 2012 ad campaign by embodying characters created specifically for Disney theme parks – their shoot is as Phineas, Ezra and Gus, the Hitchhiking Ghosts from the Haunted Mansion. Their photo caption reads, “Where you can go on the ride of your afterlife.”

Other stars who have previously contributed to the fantasy art campaign include Queen Latifah as Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid, Alec Baldwin as the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Penelope Cruz as beautiful Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

David Beckham cuts a gallant figure as Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty, making hearts flutter as he charges forward on his white horse to metaphorically save honour and virtue. His shoot took place in Burguillo Lake near Madrid, Spain, and depicts him battling a fire-breathing dragon.

For as much as it’s advertising, through Leibovitz’ lens the storytelling of these tales is so very well done. We hope she will continue this fun and fanciful body of artistic work.

You can peek behind the scenes on set over on the Disney blog.
