Good news stories: Arianna Huffington gets journalists to focus on positivity and social change

At last week’s Opportunity Nation Summit in Washington DC, Editor in Chief of the Huffington Post Arianna Huffington said that the media has a responsibility to cover “what is working,” and “to put a spotlight on the good things happening.”

She is creating a brand of journalism and a storytelling platform that focuses on good news, and on helping people solve problems themselves.

We cannot wait for a knight on a white charger to come to our rescue – we have to rescue ourselves.

“We need to change the narrative away from this fatalistic hopelessness that is permeating this country at the moment,” said Huffington, “and toward the belief once again that as John Gardener said, ‘What we have before us are some breathtaking opportunities disguised as insoluble problems’.”

Four new sections of the Huffington Post have been recently launched including the Greatest Person of the Day, but “not of the year”, explained Huffington. “We need to celebrate the good obsessively.”

The other sections include Huff Good News where individuals and communities are highlighted, Huff Impact that speaks about social causes and volunteering, and Huff Post Opportunity which specifically targets America’s unemployment issues. “We cannot stand idly by waiting for Washington to solve this problem,” Huffington said of the current unemployment crisis in the US.

The Huff Impact minisite features such stories as celebrity activism with Matt Damon cooking for charity, things to know about LinkedIn’s non-profit service, how geeks in jeans are fighting hunger, and the fact that Warren Buffet has successfully convinced another 11 billionaires to give half of their wealth to charity.

In closing Huffington’s remarks centered around looking at problems as opportunities, urging others to “summon up that spirit of the Greatest Generation and go out there and solve them.”
