Sesame Street is the first non-profit to celebrate 1 billion views on YouTube

The Count von Count, Sesame Street’s monster who loves to count, has just released a new video today marking Sesame Street’s massive milestone of over 1 billion views on YouTube by counting them.

The video, called ‘Counting the “You”s in YouTube’, celebrates a first on YouTube for a nonprofit or US children’s media outlet to reach 1 billion views, status usually reserved for celebrity music videos.

Children’s educational entertainment has become increasingly more multimedia and multi-screen based, with children and parents just as likely to use mobile and tablets as well as laptop computers to learn.

Sesame Street’s YouTube channel went live in 2006. Last year, Sesame Workshop integrated TV production with its digital media group so that interactivity and multi-platform devices are considered from the start of an idea.

To date, Sesame Street’s most popular video is Elmo’s Song, which has been viewed over 87 million times since being uploaded in March 2009. And fans of popular British drama Downton Abbey also recently got a chuckle from Sesame Street’s parody with ‘Upside Downton Abbey‘, where British muppet versions of the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) and Carson the butler (Jim Carter) have trouble with tea and crumpets due to being upside down.

Here are some of our favourite Sesame Street songs for you to share and enjoy!
