Still three days to launch – but BBC is showing Doctor Who Series 7 prequel on Youtube now

The start of Doctor Who’s 7th series is nearly here, and the BBC is giving fans a glimpse of Doctor Who domesticity with Pond Life.

Five one minute episodes are being posted on Youtube every day this week, showing what it’s like for travelling companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillam) and Rory Williams (Arthurn Darvill) to have a Time Lord in their lives (not to mention an Ood in their bathroom).

Part one sees the Doctor (Matt Smith) checking in via answering machine message, telling of toasting crumpets in a hotel bedroom with Mata Hari, and laying down backing vocals with Dizzee Rascal, amongst other adventures.

No-one on this planet is safe – we have to solve this before it’s too late!

Part two has the Doctor unexpectedly bursting into Amy and Rory’s bedroom in the middle of the night. “No-one on this planet is safe!” he exclaims. “We have to solve this before it’s too late!” Realising they have no idea what he is talking about, the Doctor reassures them that the future is safe, “really, really safe…”, interspersed with one second screaming cut scenes of a future which is anything but.

Why is he popping up in the wrong order in time and space? Because the Helmic Regulator on the TARDIS has malfunctioned, of course.

The mini stories span five months before the September 1st return of the series.

Last weekend saw Karen and Matt in New York for a preview screening of the first episode, Asylum of the Daleks, with the very first screening the week before at BFI Southbank, London. Written by lead writer Steven Moffatt and filmed in the mountains of Spain, the episode is said to feature zombie skeletons, every version of the Daleks, and a huge surprise that sets up the rest of the series.

Series 7 will also be the final swan song for long-time companions Amy and Rory, who will leave the show in episode 5. Entitled The Angel Takes Manhattan, the episode has the Doctor, Amy, Rory and their daredevil daughter River Song (Alex Kingston) fighting a showdown against the silent, sinister Weeping Angels. Gillam will be replaced by Jenna-Louise Coleman as the Doctor’s new assistant, and there are already reports of serious chemistry between the two.

This year’s Victorian era Christmas special, which is currently being filmed, will feature Withnail & I actor Richard E Grant as the villain. He has twice played the Doctor, once in 2003 in an online animated series called Scream of the Shalka and once in a Comic Relief sketch in 1996.

fans are fascinated with the making of Doctor Who and the personalities involved

Doctor Who Confidential has been axed and will not be returning to our screens in 2012. Executive Producer Caro Skinner told the Radio Times, “I think it’s really sad that we don’t have Confidential any more because the fans are fascinated with the making of Doctor Who and the personalities involved.” However, behind the scenes footage will still be shown from the making of each episode on the Doctor Who website.

In 2013, Doctor Who will celebrate its 50th anniversary as the longest running sci-fi television series in history. The BBC will mark the achievement with various live events and programs, including a biopic called An Adventure in Space and Time. It will be written by actor and writer Mark Gatiss (League of GentlemanSherlock), who himself has twice appeared in the sci-fi series.
